Beneath the surface of the marsh lies a hidden world of "benthics"—aquatic macroinvertebrates that lack backbones but serve as the backbone of our ecosystem. These organisms, including the larvae of the Common Green Darner (Anax junius) and various Caddisflies (Trichoptera), act as living sensors for water quality. Because they are relatively sedentary and can live in the water for several years, they provide a long-term "report card" on water health that a simple chemical test cannot capture. A diverse community featuring pollution-sensitive species—such as Stoneflies (Plecoptera), which require high dissolved oxygen, and Mayflies (Ephemeroptera)—signals an excellent environment. Conversely, a shift toward pollution-tolerant organisms like Aquatic Worms (Oligochaeta) or certain Non-biting Midges (Chironomidae) provides an early warning of environmental stressors.

Macroinvertebrates perform the essential "dirty work" of the marsh, acting as shredders and grazers that cycle nutrients by breaking down organic matter. This process fuels the entire food chain; for instance, many waterfowl hens, such as the Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), rely on the calcium from Snails (Gastropoda) for egg production, while diving ducks hunt the larger larvae of Caddisflies (Trichoptera) in deeper waters. Our management focuses on preserving the varied substrates these "bugs" require—from the submerged logs favored by the predatory Giant Water Bug (Lethocerus americanus) to the intricate underwater cases built by Caddisfly larvae from sand and debris. By protecting these microhabitats, we ensure that fierce underwater hunters like Dragonfly nymphs (Anisoptera) can continue to manage mosquito populations, keeping the "biological engine" of Hullett Marsh robust for both wildlife and visitors.
