General Hullett Property Information

The HPWA is a 5,420-acre provincially owned site divided by the South Maitland River into Zone A and Zone B. Hullett Marsh is free to enter, 365 days a year. No check-ins are required with FoH Staff to hunt on the property.

General Hunting Restrictions:

Sunday Hunting is permitted and as such the property does not have a late goose season.
Hunting is prohibited on or near nature trails from June 1 to August 31.
Hunting and entry are prohibited within 400m of signed/mapped baiting locations (Pintail Pool and Sat Pond 14) and the White Tail Swamp refuge. See User Guide Map for details.
See Zone A and Zone B specific hunting regulations and rules below. Hunting of Big Game (Deer) is not permitted in Zone A.

Water Access Reminders:

All motorized vessels (gas or electric) are prohibited. Only canoes/rowboats are permitted.
Water access is prohibited from May 15 to August 1 in Zone A and from May 15 to July 15 in Zone B.

Firearms Regulation Reminders:

All Hullett roads are considered "maintained." It is illegal to possess a loaded firearm within 8 metres of the travelled portion (including fencelines).
Firearms must be unloaded and encased from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise.
Non-toxic shot is mandatory for all migratory birds (except Woodcock). In Zone A, non-toxic shot is required for all species if any migratory bird season is open. Hunters in Zone A must unload and encase their firearms until at their selected stake. Target shooting is not permitted in Zone A.

Zone A General Regulations

During any open Migratory Bird Season, hunting in Zone A is limited to 52 stations identified by a parking space and a physical stake located at the hunting location. These 52 stations are comprised of 50 wetland hunting stations and two field hunting stations. Field hunting stakes are opened for use when crops are removed from the fields and availability can change from year-to-year.

Active management by Ducks Unlimited Canada causes water levels to fluctuate, making chest waders essential and scouting highly recommended to navigate deep spots near dykes safely. While FoH has deployed reflective markers to aid navigation, hunters should use GPS or a compass to locate stakes in the dark. Please watch for posted notices at parking spaces, as some stakes may be temporarily closed for research or special events.

Waterfowl Opening Day

Stake selection rules vary only on waterfowl opener, which is typically the last Saturday of September. At noon on the Friday before opening day (excluding the early goose season) a public draw is held at the 40874 Summerhill Road parking lot to determine the selection order for hunting stakes. To qualify, hunters must be physically present with their motor vehicle by 10:00 AM to register. While a stake may be shared by two individuals, only one draw entry is permitted per vehicle, and unoccupied vehicles are ineligible.

At noon, registered hunters participate in the draw to determine their selection priority. For example, a registered hunter draws the number 9 and are thus permitted to pick ninth of all stations available. After the station is selected, participants are issued a Hunter Validation/Harvest Card (HV/HC) to be displayed clearly on their dashboard that identifies their hunting location for Opening Day.

After Opening Day

From the day after waterfowl opener (the Sunday) through the rest of the migratory bird season, stake selection is first-come-first-served:

Procedure:

One vehicle must park in the numbered spot in the designated lot:
- Stakes 1-20: 40905 Summerhill Rd.
- Stakes 21-44: 81001 Burns Line.
- Stakes 45-50: 41494 Bridge Rd.
- Stakes F1/F2: Field stakes; open only after crop harvest.
Additional vehicles of hunters using the same stake must be parking behind the corresponding stake number at the Overflow Lot (40874 Summerhill Road).
If arriving Before 5:00 AM, line up in the Overflow Lot (40874 Summerhill Road) to claim a stake. Move to the specific stake lot after 5:00 AM.

Accessible Hunting Blinds

For those requiring accessibility accommodations, Hullett Marsh provides two specially designed hunting blinds located within Zone A. To ensure these facilities are available to those who need them most, reservations are strictly limited to hunters with mobility challenges, and a copy of a valid accessible parking permit must be provided to the Friends of Hullett staff during the booking process. To secure an accessible blind for your hunt, please contact the office by emailing fohoffice@hullettmarsh.com during normal business hours; we recommend booking in advance to ensure the site is ready for your arrival.

Zone A Small Game Hunting

Small game hunting in Zone A, which includes wild turkey, is permitted only when all migratory bird seasons—including mourning dove—are officially closed. During these periods, the stake-specific parking requirements are lifted; hunters may park at any available barrier in the designated Zone A lots to grant all vehicle occupants access to hunt throughout the entire zone.

Zone B General Regulations

Zone B offers a much less restrictive hunting experience compared to the managed stake system of Zone A.

Spanning 1,060 hectares of agricultural fields, forests, and swamps, this zone is open to all game during their respective seasons—including waterfowl, which can be hunted here without the opening day draw or stake-specific requirements used elsewhere on the property.

Access is straightforward: by respecting posted parking limits and positioning a vehicle at any designated barrier in a Zone B lot, all occupants are free to hunt throughout the entire zone. To ensure a safe and courteous environment, hunters are expected to park as close as possible to their intended hunting area; this practice serves as a visual signal to others that a specific section of the zone is already occupied, helping to manage hunter density.

A defining feature of Zone B is the Ring-necked Pheasant program; pheasants are released exclusively into Zone B. While these birds are provided at no cost to the public, the releases are funded entirely by hunter contributions. To ensure the program’s sustainability, participants are strongly encouraged to enter the annual Pheasant Challenge, which supports future bird releases and offers hunters the chance to win various prizes. From the misty dawn over the wetland pools to the grass and scrub of the upland fields, Hullett Marsh provides an unrivaled training ground where young hunters can gain experience in hunting under the wing of seasoned mentors.Through the Youth Waterfowl Clinic and Youth Pheasant Hunt, participants explore the nuances of species identification or the thrill of working behind world-class sporting dogs in a safe, heritage-focused environment.At Hullett Marsh, the next generation learns not only to hunt, but begins to understand their role as future stewards of Ontario’s wildlife and conservation legacy.

Youth Hunts

Youth Waterfowl Clinic

The annual Youth Waterfowl Clinic is a one-day event hosted by Friends of Hullett that provides a general primer into the complexities of waterfowl hunting. The Clinic coincides annually with Waterfowl Heritage Day and celebrates the past, present, and future of hunting in Canada. Participants gather at the Hullett Office on the third Saturday of September (a week before the general waterfowl opener) to go over the basics.

The morning begins at the Hullett Office before moving to the field for a hands-on session covering waterfowl nesting structures, duck calling instruction, decoy setup, and water safety. Participants are welcome to join in on a clay shoot at the office before breaking for lunch. n the afternoon, the focus shifts to a firearm safety talk and a clay bird shoot, followed by wetland conservation education and mallard tube stuffing. The day concludes with a duck identification slideshow and gift presentations before participants depart in the late afternoon.

To ensure a high-quality learning environment, the clinic is limited to 10 openings filled on a first-come, first-served basis, with preference given to new attendees. Parents can reserve a spot by emailing a completed registration form to the Friends of Hullett office by the September 1, 2026, deadline.

Youth Pheasant Hunt

The Huron Perth Youth Pheasant Hunt is a structured, educational event that provides apprentice hunters with a safe and high-quality introduction to upland bird hunting.

The program is specifically tailored for youth aged 12 to 15 who have successfully completed their Ontario Hunter Education and Canadian Firearms Safety courses. The day is organized into distinct morning and afternoon sessions, ensuring that each of the 30 total participants receives personalized attention from mentors and professional dog handlers. Beyond the thrill of the hunt, the event incorporates a comprehensive curriculum that includes firearm safety refreshers, presentations from Conservation Officers, and mandatory pre-hunt training at local rod and gun clubs.

Throughout the day, young hunters experience the tradition of hunting over expertly trained dogs while learning the practical skills necessary for a successful outing, such as proper field dressing, transporting, and even cooking tutorials for their harvest. The program emphasizes ethics and safety above all else, requiring a mandatory orientation and a trap shoot on the day of the event to build confidence before heading into the field. This community-driven initiative, supported by a wide variety of local and provincial organizations, offers a complimentary lunch and educational demonstrations, fostering a sense of camaraderie among the next generation of outdoorsmen and women.
