Paddling
Experience the serene beauty of the Hullett Provincial Wildlife Area from a unique vantage point by taking to the water. Canoeing and kayaking offer some of the most intimate ways to explore the marsh, allowing paddlers to glide silently through diverse ecosystems that are often inaccessible by foot. Because of the shallow water depths and dense aquatic vegetation characteristic of the area, a non-motorized watercraft is the most effective tool for navigating the interior of the ponds and observing the vibrant wildlife and lush flora up close.

The marsh is composed of several distinct pools separated by an extensive system of dykes. While this provides a variety of environments to explore—from the expansive open waters of the larger pools to the narrow, sheltered channels—paddlers should be prepared to portage their craft over the dykes when moving between different bodies of water. To maintain the tranquility of the habitat and protect the nesting and feeding grounds of resident species, gas and battery-powered motors are strictly prohibited.
Access is made convenient through several designated launch points located near key parking lots, specifically at 911 locations 40905 Summerhill Rd., 81001 Burns Line, and 41494 Bridge Rd.

To ensure the protection of our resident waterfowl during their most vulnerable stages, the marsh operates under strict seasonal access windows that differ by zone. In Zone A, all water access is prohibited from May 15 to July 31 to protect nesting birds. In Zone B , the closure begins on May 15 but concludes earlier on July 15. These dates are strictly enforced to minimize disturbance during the peak breeding season.
Outside of these windows, paddling is most popular in the early spring before the closures begin and in the late summer and autumn once the pools reopen. Before heading out, visitors are encouraged to check current water levels, as these are managed by Ducks Unlimited Canada and can fluctuate significantly throughout the year.

Know Before You Go:
Paddling Safety
Safety is paramount when exploring the HPWA waters. Always wear a Canadian-approved PFD and carry a mandatory safety kit, including a whistle and a bailer. Be mindful that water levels can change rapidly due to dam adjustments, and thick aquatic vegetation can make paddling strenuous; always scout your entry and exit points before launching. Since the marsh is a multi-use area, paddlers out during the autumn should be aware of hunting seasons and are encouraged to wear high-visibility clothing when portaging near dykes or trails. Finally, always tell someone your planned route and expected return time, as cell service can be spotty within the interior of the marsh.
