MarshReach

Hullett Provincial Wildlife Area is part of a national citizen science effort to monitor and protect Canada’s vital ecosystems through MarshReach.

This initiative is a specialized extension of the broader GeoReach program, which tracks environmental changes across various landforms including coasts, glaciers, and rivers using publicly collected photos.

Developed in collaboration with the University of Waterloo, MarshReach bridges the gap between outdoor recreation and academic science by turning visitor snapshots into data-driven stewardship.

Ten photo-monitoring stands are located throughout the Hullett Provincial Wildlife Area. Each stand features a cradle that secures a smartphone at a fixed angle and height. By standardizing the field of view, these tools allow casual snapshots to be compiled into a continuous visual timeline.

Researchers use specialized tools to analyze these submissions, including AI segmentation models to isolate specific habitat features, such as green index calculators to monitor vegetation health as shown here.

The resulting georectified data can track changes down to the centimeter, matching the accuracy of advanced drone surveys.

Your contributions provide the visual evidence needed to monitor water level fluctuations, seasonal transitions, and the long-term success of habitat restoration projects here at Hullett Marsh!
